We seem to be at a crossroads
We seem to be at a real crossroads right now. We regularly meet with prospective clients who strangely share most, if not all, of the same problems. They inevitably include some of the following:-
· Decreasing resources in terms of staff, resources and money.
· IT staff with sufficient and current accreditation, knowledge and training.
· Colleagues who are unwilling to face change and deal with it effectively.
· End users who just will not do as they are requested and then blame IT for problems.
· Spend most days firefighting, not making sustainable change improvements.
· External and internal challenges from fraudsters.
· Legally binding compliance issues with which they are not familiar.
· New and emerging demands from other parts of the business.
· Talk of engaging in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
· A plethora of indispensable point solutions to evaluate and maybe choose from.
The fundamental problem however is inevitably based in entrenched cultures which are unwilling to face change and deal with it effectively. We frequently meet staff who want to just do more of the same. “Let’s just scale up and out like we always have - it’s easy.” It is. Right up to the point that the enterprise has to stump up and to pay for it.
We’ve tried so many ways to explain that any IT infrastructure merely exists to support, process and deliver data. This is because we instead have so many structural systems which have been expanded exponentially to store any data whatsoever.
It is now quite normal for us to run absolutely free tools to show clients how much of their data is beyond useless to them. It’s a bit of a generalisation, but there is usually 80% of stored data that is being expensively managed to no business benefit whatsoever. Now that may be far short of an overall 80% cost reduction, but it most certainly will be a very big dent in the aforementioned problems; and they have very serious cost implications in themselves.
The obvious problem is the comfort zone. It’s all too easy to try to keep on doing more of the same instead of facing changes which are as much psychological and cultural as technical. Perhaps the first two are the most difficult to face in all walks of life. Our challenge is to show clients just how easy it is to break the cycle and bring about constructive and sustainable change.
